THE CENTER TOWN
The center town of Agulo is located in the lower part of the municipality of Agulo and sits on a coastal platform of approximately 200 m above sea level, surrounded by cliffs with walls up to 400 meters high. Like a giant step, this amphitheatre separates the town centre from the highlands of La Palmita and Las Rosas.
The particular charm of this town centre, which sits on two small hills that modify the urbanization of the area, means that we can find urban dwellings with a special charm that deserve to be highlighted within the historic centre of the municipality, with many of them dating back to the 19th and early 20th centuries. This urban proliferation was not accidental, since it coincides with the period of maximum economic apogee of the municipality.
Likewise, this municipal town is the most populated area of the municipality, where areas of cultivation and grouped dwellings are combined with the conservation of narrow and cobbled streets. In addition, there are three urban centers, La MontaƱeta, Las Casas and El Charco. In the area of the coast, accessed by the neighboring municipality of Hermigua, is the neighborhood of Lepe.
Agulo is currently one of the best preserved historical centres in the whole of the Canarian Archipelago, because the tradition of preserving traditional housing within the municipality makes it a true paradigm of the revaluation of domestic architecture on the island of La Gomera.
