THE MERIGA DAM AND ARBORETUM
The Meriga dam was built in the 1980s, creating a unusual setting, a tranquil lake in the middle of Garajonay forest. The trunks of some large laurels and viñátigos that were submerged are still standing and on foggy days they look like spirits or ghosts floating over the water. A few metres from La Cancela de Meriga is the national park’s arboretum, a simple of Gomeran laurisilva trees whose scientific and common names are identified by small signs. In some case, the trees have grown so much that the signs are very high up, looking at the sky like the trees themselves.
