PATRONAL FEAST OF SAN MARCOS EVANGELISTA
The festivities in honor of Saint Mark Evangelist, patron saint of this municipality, are commemorated every year on April 24 and 25 and end a week later with the celebration of the so-called Novena de San Marcos.
To know its history we would have to go back to the founding times of Agulo. This patronal feast is a unique case in the Canary Islands and we could say that it is a cultural attraction of the first order for the municipality of Agulo and the island of La Gomera. The main acts that compose it are; the Hogueras de San Marcos, bonfires that are skipped on the night of April 24, and on the other hand, the Octava de San Marcos, where the saint’s descent to the hermitage located on the beach of San Marcos is made.
